You may be wondering what all of this Class, A, B and C business is about.
The class of RV’s pertain to motorhome style RV’s and do not include towable RV’s like travel trailer, fifth wheels, pop up trailers or toy haulers.
Let’s take an in depth look at the 3 different classes of motorized RV’s as well as some of their features.
Class A
If it’s big, square & boxy, and looks similar to a transit bus, then it’s a Class A motorhome. Considered the most luxurious of all RVs.
At the very top end of the scale is the Class A diesel motorcoach (or diesel pusher). They start in price around $100,000 and go well into the millions.
Pros – They usually have multiple slideouts, giving more square footage. They can be as long as 45′, which means more room for a big master suite, even a laundry room.
Cons – Driving a coach this size is a learned skill. The fuel economy is, well, not as good as in a Class B or towable RV.
Class C
The class C motorhome make use of a standard cargo van as the driving portion of the RV.
They range in length in feet from 20′ on up to 33 feet.
Many will forgo the rear bedroom suite in favor of easier maneuverability. With the large cab-over bed, folding sofa, and drop down dinette, you can still sleep 6 comfortably.
Pros - This smaller motorhome can get you into more campgrounds with plenty of beds to sleep the entire family. Also, it’s easier to get service on a widely known Ford or Chevrolet drive train and cab.
Cons - The ones that have a rear bedroom also have a long rear overhang beyond the rear wheels. You’ll have more of a tail swing when you go around corners.
Class B
Class B RVs are the smallest in the lineup. The determining factor in these RVs is the lack of a cab-over portion. Again, using a cargo van as the base.
Larger ones have fiberglass bodies that approach the size of smaller Class C’s. Manufacturers of Class B RVs can build whatever you’re looking for.
Pros - Many Class B RVs will fit right into a standard garage. They make a great second family vehicle and the mileage will be better than with Class A and Class C motorhomes.
Cons - Everything is small in a Class B RV. Space is limited, so things like bathrooms and showers are squeezed into tight corners. [The Fun Times Guide]
As you can see, each class of motorized RV has different features and meets certain needs. All of this depends on how you, the owner, plan to use your RV.
A Class B motorhome may be perfect for the small family that wants to take overnight trips away, but it isn’t a good fit for a family of 5 who want to travel cross country for months at a time.
Please do your research and take a look at all 3 types of motorhomes before you make your final decision. If you get this wrong, it could be a costly mistake!
